Carmen de Urioste-Azcorra was born in Santurce (Vizcaya, Spain). Prior to her Arizona State University appointment, she taught Spanish and Spanish literature at the Center for Cross-Cultural Study in Seville, Spain and at Gettysburg College.
Her primary research focus is on contemporary Spanish literature and culture. She is the author of Novela y sociedad en la España contemporánea (1994-2009) and Novela andaluza (1900-1936): Erotismo, feminismo y regionalismo. Both books investigate the relations between urban citizens and society. Because women have long been considered marginal citizens, her current research interest is centered on the recovery of work authored by forgotten Spanish women writers, hoping to contribute to their recognition as important contributors to the literary canon. Within this framework, she edited La casa de enfrente (2014) by Ernestina de Champourcin, De Madrid a New York. Artículos, conferencias, cartas (2018), by Victoria Kent, and Preciadas cartas (1932-1979). Correspondencia entre Gabriela Mistral, Victoria Ocampo y Victoria Kent (2019), coedited with Elizabeth Horan and Cynthia Tompkins. In addition, she edited Cuentos judíos contemporáneos (2010), by Rafael Cansinos Assens. From this same author, Cansinos Assens, she is researching his epistolary production.
A secondary research and teaching interest is on Digital Humanities. In collaboration with one of her graduate classes, she developed a Photographic Map of the Spanish Generation of ’27. Another ongoing project is a compilation of work by American Artists on Spain.
She is the editor of Ámbitos Feministas (2016-Present), the former editor of Letras Femeninas (2005-2014), the book-review editor for Feministas Unidas (2008-Present) and the director of the Spanish Language and Culture Program - Spain (2010-Present).
She is an amateur actress and a short-story writer.
