Lynette Myles received her master's and doctorate in English from Arizona State University specializing in African American Literature. During her graduate studies, she was awarded the Division of Graduate Studies Dissertation Fellowship at Arizona State University for scholarly promise and outstanding dissertation research. Her research interests are interdisciplinary: 19th- and 20th-Century African American Llterature; slave narratives; African American women’s writing and feminist practice; discourse and representations of race, gender, class in American culture, sexuality, spatial studies, rhetoric and composition, liberation pedagogy, and literacy.
Myles is co-editor with Elizabeth McNeil, Neal A. Lester, and DoVeanna Fulton of "PUSHing Boundaries, PUSHing Art: Considering Sapphire's Works for Scholarship and Pedagogy" (released December 2012), which offers a range of critical perspectives and theoretical approaches to studying and teaching Sapphire’s work.
Myles’ book "Female Subjectivity in African American Women's Narratives of Enslavement: Beyond Borders" (2009) examines five female narratives that look at Black women’s experiences from spatial and transformative perspectives. Myles publishing also includes "Locating Safe Sites for Transformation in Sapphire's 'PUSH,'" "At the Crossroads of Black Female Autonomy, Or Digression as Resistance in Quicksand and The Street" (2005), and "AFH 394: (Un)Ruly Voices of African American Women: Engendering and Reclaiming Black Female Realities at Arizona State University" (2006). She is also co-author of "Going After Something Else" with Elizabeth McNeil, Neal A. Lester, and DoVeanna Fulton (2014).
Myles' teaching includes African American literature, Black women's writings, and first-year writing composition. Myles major goals in teaching writing composition focus on teaching students effective writing skills and expanding their critical reading abilities. For her commitment to teaching excellence and mentoring, she was nominated for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean's Distinguished Teaching Award at Arizona State University in 2008 and 2005.
