Tonya is currently a PhD student in the university's English Department for Linguistics-Applied Linguistics (LAL) and had completed the university's masters in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Program in 2014.
While at ASU, she has had the opportunity to work as a Graduate Research Assistant to Foundation Professor of English and Director of Project Humanities, Dr. Neal A. Lester. Now, she is an instructor with Writing Programs, and teaching First Year Composition courses for both mainstream and second language writers. She occasionally teaches additional TESOL, sociolinguistic, and graduate writing courses.
During the 2015-2016 academic year, she served as Assistant Director and in 2016-2017AY as the Associate Director of Second Language Writing. It had also been an honor to serve as Associate Chair for the 2016 Symposium on Second Language Writing, which returned to ASU in October 2016 with Paul Kei Matsuda. During and since this time, she has continued to supervise the Second Language Writing Tutor (L2WT) Internship Program for TEFL certificate students and MTESOL graduate students.
Previously, she lived and worked for six years in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), English teacher and Prefectural Advisor for the JET Programme in Ishikawa, Japan. As a Prefectural advisor, she also had the opportunity to collaborate with the prefectural teacher training division to construct and implement teacher training frameworks, program administration, and job counseling.
Prior to moving to Japan, she worked for two large financial companies in Phoenix and Denver with financial processing and settlement research. While in Colorado she completed post-baccalaureate work and a BA in Asian Studies with CU-Boulder's East Asian Languages and Civilizations Department and completed a BA in Business Administration at U of P.

Past research interests include: Asian studies (specific to Japan, China, India and Korea) in history, culture, literature and anthropology, Japanese language, Education in Japan, a concentrated study of Material Culture in modern Shinto, Business Administration, Financial processing
Research as related to work with Dr. Lester: African American Literature, culture, and material culture; N-Word; hair; body image; public humanities; values in society; spoken word; discourse in media and social media
