Manuel G. Aviles-Santiago is the Vice Dean at the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts and Professor of Communication and Culture at the School of Applied Sciences and Arts. Previously, he served as Associate Dean of Academic Programs and Curricular Innovation and the Director of the Office of Veterans and Military Academic Engagement (OVMAE). Aviles-Santiago earned his doctoral degree in Media Studies from the Moody College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin. He has been honored as a Pre-doctoral and Post-doctoral Fellow by the Ford Foundation, awards administered by what is now known as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Aviles-Santiago has presented his research at numerous prestigious conferences, including the International Communication Association, Race and Media, Society for Cinema and Media Studies, Latino Studies, the Latin American Studies Association, and Veteran Studies. He has contributed to leading journals such as Communication, Culture and Critique, the Journal of Latin American Communication Research (JLACR), Caribbean Studies Journal, and Flow TV. Additionally, he is the author of the book "Puerto Rican Soldiers and Second-class Citizenship: Representations in Media," published by Palgrave in 2014. Dr. Aviles-Santiago has been awarded several prestigious grants throughout his academic career, including from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Arizona Veterans Donations Funds, and the Arizona State University Summer Research Initiative.
In addition to his academic pursuits, he is also deeply committed to being a public intellectual. He hosted the "Break It Down" segment on PBS, where he engaged in insightful conversations on current popular culture. Moreover, he has regularly written editorial columns for the 'El Nuevo Día' newspaper, contributing thought-provoking pieces that explore the intersections of media, society, and culture.
During his service as the Office for Veteran and Military Academic Engagement Director, Avilés-Santiago played a key role in promoting communication between military and civilian communities through innovative teaching, research, and community engagement programs. He coordinated the "Veteran, Society, and Service" certificate program, supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additionally, Avilés-Santiago successfully organized the 5th Veterans in Society Conference at Arizona State University, which focused on the critical themes of resilience, pedagogy, and veteran studies.
Avilés-Santiago received the Outstanding Latina/o Faculty Research Award from Dr. Eugene Garcia for his influential work promoting higher education for underrepresented ethnic groups and economically disadvantaged communities. He has also been honored with the Catalyst Award for his commendable efforts in advocating diversity and inclusion at Arizona State University and the broader community.
