Emily Santora is graduate student in the Biology and Society master’s program. She is on the History and Philosophy of Science track and is advised by Dr. Jane Maienschein and Dr. Monica Gaughan. Emily researches the history of menstrual health education in order to better understand how biological and socio-cultural definitions of the menstrual cycle impact the ability to understand and treat menstrual disorders.
Prior to beginning her graduate studies, Emily graduated from Barrett, the Honors College at ASU with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Global Health and a minor in Women and Gender Studies. Her honors thesis was conducted on socioeconomic and cultural obstacles impeding menstrual health management in low-income counties and how those obstacles pose additional challenges for women and girls with endometriosis. She completed a research apprenticeship in the Culture, Health, and Environment Lab in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, and she has written encyclopedia articles about endometriosis and menstruation for The Embryo Project Encyclopedia.
