Brent Scholar grew up in New Jersey, and considers himself more of a New Yorker, since that is where his family resided. He had an interesting road to a college degree like many of his students. He started off as an actor at TISCH School of the Arts, and then went to three other schools, including a study abroad program at Oxford University, before earning his Bachelor of Arts in English. He then earned his MBA on the coast of Malibu, CA. He shifted his focus to a professional career in restaurant hospitality, secondary mortgage market, entrepreneurial ventures, nonprofits and ultimately finding his way to researching the effects of social media on online student retention as the focus of his doctoral work in organizational leadership.
Scholar is an organizational leadership practitioner and professor who teaches from a real-world perspective, having his students apply the theory they are learning to case study applications. He focuses on team building, creating diverse and inclusive workspaces, strategic planning, and organizational effectiveness. He always believes that bringing people together and giving everyone the opportunity to be included is what makes any organization, and any society, stronger. Current projects include continuing his work spreading the word about the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, including universal broadband access for all. He also collects pandemic stories and research on teaching best practices, while encouraging students to participate in a global experience.
Scholar holds memberships with Omicron Delta Kappa, Leadership Society, Diversity Leadership Alliance, Achilles International, Universal Broadband Committee and Are We There Yet ShapingEDU at ASU committees, Teaching Followers Courage, and Conscious Capitalism Arizona.
Scholar has been recognized as the Diversity Leadership Alliance Volunteer of the Year, and was awarded the Omicron Delta Kappa Community Commitment Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Award, Serious Play Gold Award for Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Game, and Young Nonprofit Professionals Network Pay if Forward Award. He was also awarded the CISA Faculty Mentor Award.
