Ian McGibboney has taught Introduction to Editing (JMC 313) at the Cronkite School since 2019. He is the senior page editor on the sports team at the USA TODAY Network’s Design Center in Phoenix. There, he writes and edits headlines, decks, cutlines, pull quotes and refers — and trims articles to fit — for the company’s sports sections nationwide. He previously did the same for A-sections and feature, opinion, business and entertainment pages.
McGibboney previously worked as a digital producer, copy editor and page designer for the Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal, and performed similar duties at the Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader. He frequently wrote articles and shot/edited photos and video for both publications. He has also reported for the (Baton Rouge, La.) Advocate, the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report and the Daily Iberian (New Iberia, La.), among other publications.
During his journalism career, McGibboney has served as breaking news reporter, features reporter, government reporter, sports writer, columnist, copy editor, page designer and digital producer. He has written articles and official social media posts, shot photos and videos, designed graphics and edited copy. He holds a master’s degree in English and a bachelor’s degree in journalism, both from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
