Dr. Xin Xu is an assistant professor at Arizona State University. He is a member of the graduate faculty in the Clean Energy Program within the Polytechnic School (TPS), the System Engineering Program within the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks (MSN), and the Materials Science and Engineering Program within the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport, and Energy (SEMTE) at ASU.
He completed his B.S. in Physics from Nanjing University in 2014, and his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Northwestern University with Prof. Sossina Haile in 2019. From 2015 to 2019, he received transmission electron microscopy training at Argonne National Laboratory with Dr. Charudatta Phatak and Dr. Amanda Petford-Long. His doctoral work focused on developing local multimodal methods to understand the charge transport mechanism at grain boundaries in electroceramics. In 2019, he joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University as a postdoctoral scholar with Prof. William Chueh to study failure mechanisms in solid-state batteries through operando dynamic approaches. His research interests focus on developing a fundamental understanding of charge transport and the related electro-chemo-mechanics in mixed electronic and ionic materials to address energy and environmental challenges.
2014-2019, Ph.D., Applied Physics, Northwestern University
2010-2014, B.S. with Honors, Physics, Nanjing University
Xu’s research interests focus on charge transport, solid-state batteries and next-generation clean energy technology. Primarily, he delves into the fundamental understanding of charge transport behavior in energy materials and failure mechanism in electrochemical processes. This encompasses a broad class of renewable energy storage and conversion systems such as batteries and fuel cells, with research areas including charge transport theory, dynamic characterization, and scalable device fabrication.
