Grotz's current research areas are critical/cultural studies and organizational communication studies. More specifically, she explores the ways that institutional and organizational power influence people and their ability to enact agency and resistance. Grotz's previous research projects includes an exploration of reality television shows' impact on audiences through fan discourse analysis on social media platforms, dating app user behavior patterns, and case studies on private organizations' department effectiveness for implementing/soliciting feedback.
