Lina Karam

Lina J. Karam, IEEE Fellow, Editor-In-Chief of the IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing (2019-2021), received the B.E. degree in computer and communications engineering from the American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon, in 1989 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA, in 1992 and 1995, respectively. She is currently an Emerita Professor at ASU (2020-present). Prior to 2020, she was a tenured Full Professor in the School of Electrical, Computer & Energy Engineering, Arizona State University, where she also directs the Image, Video, & Usabilty (IVU) Research Laboratory. Her industrial experience includes image and video compression development at AT&T Bell Labs, Murray Hill, NJ, USA, multidimensional data processing and visualization at Schlumberger, and collaboration on computer vision, machine learning, image/video processing, compression, and transmission projects with industries including Intel, Google, Qualcomm, NTT, Motorola, General Dynamics, and NASA. She has over 250 technical publications and she is an inventor on eight issued patents.

Dr. Karam was awarded a U.S. National Science Foundation CAREER Award, a NASA Technical Innovation Award, 2018 IEEE Region 6 Award, 2014 IEEE SPS Best Paper Award, 2012 Intel Outstanding Researcher Award, and 2012 IEEE Phoenix Section Outstanding Faculty Award. Dr. Karam served as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing. She also served on several journal editorial boards, including IEEE SPS journals such as the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, the IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing, and the IEEE Signal Processing Letters, and as Lead Guest Editor of the Proceedings of IEEE, Special Issue on Perceptual-Based Media Processing,  IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing, Special Issue on Visual Quality Assessment, and IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, Special Issue on Autonomous Driving. She served on the IEEE PSPB Strategic Planning Committee, IEEE TechRxiv Advisory Board, IEEE SPS Board of Governors, IEEE SPS Conference Board, IEEE SPS Awards Board, IEEE SPS Publications Board, IEEE SPS Image, Video & Multidimensional Signal Processing (IVMSP) Technical Commuttee, IEEE Circuits & Systems (CAS) Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Technical Committee, IEEE CAS Fellow Evaluation Committee, and on the editorial boards of several journals. She served as the General Co-Chair of the 2019 IEEE ICME, General Chair of the 2016 IEEE ICIP, Technical Program Chair of the 2009 IEEE ICIP, General Chair of the 2011 IEEE DSP/SPE Workshops and on the origanizing/technical committees of several international conferences. She cofounded the international conference on the Quality of Multimedia Experience (QoMEX).  She established the first IEEE Multimedia Star Innovator Award (awarded at the 2019 IEEE ICME) and she co-established the world's first Visual Innovation Award (awarded at IEEE ICIP 2016). 

At ASU, Dr. Karam helped in established two transdisciplinary programs, the Computer Engineering Program (across two schools) and the Robotics & Autonomous Systems (RAS) Program (across four schools). She served as the Computer Engineering Program Chair and more recently as the Computer Engineering Director for Industry Engagement. She initiated and led a university-wide initiative (2017-2018) on automated mobility/sefl-driving cars across various schools and across four ASU campuses (Tempe, Downtown, Mesa/Polytechnic, Washington/DC) and initiated public-private-government partnerships which culminated in the establishment of the state-level Institute of Automated Mobility. She served as a member of the ASU Engineering Dean's Faculty Advisory Committee and on the ASU University Promotion and Tenure Committee. Prof. Karam developed several new courses at ASU including Real-Time DSP (EEE 404); Multi-Dimesional Signal Processing (EEE 507); Image and Video Processing and Compression (EEE 508); and more recently Deep Learning for Media Processing and Understanding (EEE 598).  

Dr. Karam is currently serving on the IEEE TechRxiv Advisory Board,  IEEE TAB/PSPB Product and Services Committee, IEEE EAB Faculty Resources Committee, IEEE SPS Image, Video & Multidimensional Signal Processing (IVMSP) Technical Committee (as an affiliate member), and IEEE Circuits & Systems (CAS) Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Technical Committee. She is also an expert delegate of the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29 Committee (Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information) and participating in JPEG/MPEG standardization activities.
