Jake Patten

Jake Patten is a cognitive scientist with strong skills in research design, project management, and data science.

Patten works with the SAMBA research group/think tank at ASU that is attempting to answer some of the most intriguing questions about auditory perception; is localization a discrete or distributed process, how are regular people different from talented musicians and how are both different from musicians with perfect pitch, what information do we use to create rich auditory scenes, and more. He also consults with outside companies in the realm of data science, data mining, and user experience. In that role, he brings more than eight years' experience designing well-controlled research studies into the corporate and industry worlds and uses his command of statistics to tease out information that isn't always visible to the untrained eye.

Patten's pet areas of interest are auditory perception, cognitive science, statistics, and multidimensional scaling. His Masters and Doctoral theses focused on timbre (specifically spectral envelope) and its contribution to auditory scene analysis. he's also investigated the statistical patterns in human thought and foraging behavior. Lastly, Patten has developed a program to bring multidimensional scaling newfound life and scientific utility by working in a statistical analysis component to its already useful visualization and dimension reduction procedures.
