Ashok Mishra joined the W. P. Carey School of Business as a professor of agribusiness in 2015. Professor Mishra’s research interests lie in food policy and focus on the economic performance of global agribusiness due to production efficiency, mergers and acquisitions, and volatile commodity prices. He has also studied farmland valuation, particularly how various business issues can impact agricultural land values, firm profitability, and, ultimately, the cost of producing and marketing food. His most recent work focuses on factors affecting food security in developing nations.

Ashok has published prolifically, including 276 articles in refereed journals, six books, and 26 book chapters. He has 17,451 citations in Google Scholar (with an h-index of 72 and an i10-index of 256); REPEC ranks him in the top 2% of the 59,325 economists registered worldwide and the World's Top 2% of Scientists. He has received numerous research and teaching awards, including outstanding journal article awards in the AJAE, AFR, JAAE, Agribusiness: International, and CAER. 

Ashok provided leadership in the agricultural economics profession by serving as an editor/co-editor and/or associate editor in several journals and on the editorial boards of many professional journals. These include Editor-in-Chief of Agribusiness: An International Journal (2024-present). Co-editor of Agricultural Economics: An International Journal (2015-2024), co-editor of Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy (2011-2013); (2) associate editor of the Agricultural Finance Review journal (2010-2020); (3) co-editor of the Journal of Agricultural and Applied Economics (2007-2010), and editor, the Journal of Agribusiness in Developing and Emerging Economies (2017-2024). Ashok was appointed Series Editor for Routledge Studies in Agricultural Economics in July 2015. 

Ashok has provided outstanding service to the AAEA by serving as Chair of several committees: Employment Committee, Economics Statistics and Information Resources Committee, Selected Papers, and Poster Committee. He served on the AAEA Trust Committee twice and helped raise money by initiating and establishing six Appreciation Clubs for the AAEA. In addition, Ashok served as Chair of many AAEA sections: South Asia Section, Applied Risk Analysis, Agricultural Finance and Management, Treasurer/Secretary of the International Section, and Chair of the NC-1177 Research Committee on Agricultural and Rural Finance Markets in Transition. Since 2015, Ashok has generously and unselfishly served as a mentor to early-career professionals in AAEA. Dr. Mishra has generously devoted his time and expertise to mentoring early-career professionals, young faculty members of the SAEA, and AAEA colleagues at LSU and ASU.

Ashok recently linked the above strands of his work on farm income diversification to the study of farmers’ risk management strategies and, more generally, agribusinesses. He extended this to add farmers’ use of credit, futures, and crop insurance to manage risk. He extended this from the enterprise production strategy to the value chain risk management strategy, including, for example, contract farming. Ashok studied these themes in the US, Nepal, India, and China. Several insightful articles have emerged from this work, including his 2018 article in AEPP on contract farming and its relationship to labor allocation and risk management in India. For decades, Ashok has been a key bridge-builder between US and Asian agricultural economists. He has also built consortia between US university agricultural economists and international agricultural research (CGIAR) center collaborators in IRRI, IFPRI, CIMMYT, and ICRISAT.

Professor Mishra previously spent a decade as an economist at the Economic Research Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He has been commended for his research in agriculture, being named a Fellow by the Northeastern Association of Agricultural Resource Economists in 2013. He was elected 2024 Honorary Life Member (equivalent to a Fellow), International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE); Mishra was elected 2022 Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA); 2020 Fellow of the Western Agricultural Economics Association (WAEA); 2019 Outstanding Alumnus, North Carolina State University (NCSU); 2017 Outstanding Alumnus, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, India; 2021 Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), India.

Before joining W. P. Carey, Professor Mishra served as Donald E. Welge Endowed Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at Louisiana State University (LSU, 2007-2015) and as a senior economist at the Economic Research Service (ERS, 1997-2007). He received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture and agricultural economics from the G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, his master’s degree in economics from the University of Aberdeen, and his doctorate in Economics from North Carolina State University.
