Ashok Mishra joined the W. P. Carey School of Business as a professor of agribusiness in 2015. Professor Mishra’s research interests lie in food policy and focus on the economic performance of global agribusiness, with a focus on production efficiency, mergers and acquisitions, and volatile commodity prices. He has also studied farmland valuation, particularly how various business issues can impact agricultural land values, firm profitability, and, ultimately, the cost of producing and marketing food. His most recent work focuses on factors affecting food security in developing nations.

Ashok has published prolifically, including 280 articles in refereed journals, seven books, and 26 book chapters. He has 19,300 citations on Google Scholar (with an h-index of 79 and an i10-index of 278); RePEc ranks him in the top 2% of the 59,325 economists registered worldwide and in the World's Top 2% of Scientists. He has received numerous research and teaching awards, including outstanding journal article awards in the AJAE, AFR, JAAE, Agribusiness: International, and CAER. 

Ashok provided leadership in the agricultural economics profession by serving as an editor/co-editor and/or associate editor in several journals and on the editorial boards of many professional journals. These include Editor-in-Chief of Agribusiness: An International Journal (2024-present). Co-editor of Agricultural Economics: An International Journal (2015-2024), co-editor of Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy (2011-2013); (2) associate editor of the Agricultural Finance Review journal (2010-2020); (3) co-editor of the Journal of Agricultural and Applied Economics (2007-2010), and editor of the Journal of Agribusiness in Developing and Emerging Economies (2017-2024). Ashok was appointed Series Editor for Routledge Studies in Agricultural Economics in July 2015. 

Ashok has provided outstanding service to the AAEA by serving as Chair of several committees: Employment Committee, Economics Statistics and Information Resources Committee, Selected Papers, and Poster Committee. He served on the AAEA Trust Committee twice and helped raise funds by establishing six Appreciation Clubs for the AAEA. In addition, Ashok served as Chair of many AAEA sections: South Asia Section, Applied Risk Analysis, Agricultural Finance and Management, Treasurer/Secretary of the International Section, and Chair of the NC-1177 Research Committee on Agricultural and Rural Finance Markets in Transition. Since 2015, Ashok has generously and unselfishly served as a mentor to early-career professionals in AAEA. Dr. Mishra has generously devoted his time and expertise to mentoring early-career professionals, young faculty members of the SAEA, and AAEA colleagues at LSU and ASU.

Ashok recently linked the above strands of his work on farm income diversification to the study of farmers’ risk management strategies and, more generally, agribusinesses. He extended this to add farmers’ use of credit, futures, and crop insurance to manage risk. He extended this from the enterprise production strategy to the value chain risk management strategy, including, for example, contract farming. Ashok studied these themes in the US, Nepal, India, and China. Several insightful articles have emerged from this work, including his 2018 AEPP article on contract farming and its relationship to labor allocation and risk management in India. For decades, Ashok has been a key bridge-builder between US and Asian agricultural economists. He has also built consortia between US university agricultural economists and collaborators at international agricultural research centers (CGIAR), including IRRI, IFPRI, CIMMYT, and ICRISAT.

Professor Mishra previously spent a decade as an economist at the Economic Research Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He has been commended for his research in agriculture and was named a Fellow by the Northeastern Association of Agricultural Resource Economists in 2013. He was elected 2024 Honorary Life Member (equivalent to a Fellow), International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE); Mishra was elected 2022 Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA); 2020 Fellow of the Western Agricultural Economics Association (WAEA); 2019 Outstanding Alumnus, North Carolina State University (NCSU); 2017 Outstanding Alumnus, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, India; 2021 Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), India.

Before joining W. P. Carey, Professor Mishra served as Donald E. Welge Endowed Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at Louisiana State University (LSU, 2007-2015) and as a senior economist at the Economic Research Service (ERS, 1997-2007). He received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture and agricultural economics from the G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, his master’s degree in economics from the University of Aberdeen, and his doctorate in Economics from North Carolina State University.

Drawing on applied economics, finance, agribusiness, and data analytics, I study how farm business owners, agricultural lenders, processors, input suppliers, food and beverage firms, and other food-system participants respond to changing markets, technologies, environmental conditions, and government policies.

A central theme of my scholarship is enterprise resilience. My research investigates how access to credit, crop insurance, government programs, business diversification, financial structure, risk preferences, and risk-management strategies affect the survival, productivity, profitability, and growth of agricultural businesses. I have also examined farmland values, agricultural credit markets, labor allocation, succession and family business decisions, contract farming, market power, food loss, agricultural value chains, precision agriculture, digital technologies, climate and weather risks, and the distributional consequences of agricultural policies. My recent projects integrate geospatial soil and weather data, machine learning, experimental methods, and advanced econometric techniques to improve crop forecasting, insurance pricing, credit analysis, business-risk assessment, and policy evaluation.

I have published 268 refereed journal articles, as well as books, book chapters, government reports, working papers, and other scholarly contributions. My research has appeared in leading journals in agricultural economics, applied economics, agribusiness, development economics, finance, food policy, environmental economics, and operations research. This work has received broad scholarly recognition through citations, best paper awards, outstanding journal article awards, recognition as a top-cited article, and two Publication of Lasting Impact awards. I have been elected Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, Fellow of the Western Agricultural Economics Association, Fellow of the Northeastern Agricultural and Resource Economics Association, and Fellow of India’s National Academy of Agricultural Sciences. I was also named an Honorary Life Member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists.

My research program has attracted approximately $3.74 million in competitively awarded and sponsored funding, in addition to NOK 700,000 from the Research Council of Norway. Major sponsors include the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the USDA Economic Research Service, USAID, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Cotton Incorporated, and the U.S.-Israel Binational Agricultural Research and Development Fund. These projects address agricultural finance, racial disparities in farm lending, crop insurance, near-real-time crop forecasting, enterprise risk, food loss, food safety, technology adoption, climate resilience, rural development, and the performance of agricultural and food businesses. They have also created research opportunities for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, junior scholars, and interdisciplinary collaborators.

The national impact of my research is closely connected to my decade of service as an economist and senior economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service. My research contributed to the evidence base for assessing the financial condition of U.S. agricultural enterprises, farm-household well-being, agricultural credit and insurance markets, farmland values, labor allocation, and the effects of government support programs. Some of this work was used to brief senior officials at USDA, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Council of Economic Advisers. I also contributed to USDA farm-income and balance-sheet forecasts, farmland-value forecasting models, analyses of agricultural safety-net programs, and research on financial management and economic risk.

My current U.S.-focused research extends this policy and managerial impact. Projects funded by USDA-NIFA use geospatial soil quality and weather data to investigate racial disparities in agricultural lending, improve crop insurance pricing, and develop near-real-time crop yield and production forecasts. Other studies examine extreme heat and agricultural productivity, crop-insurance rating, precision-technology adoption, health-insurance coverage and labor allocation among farm business households, and the performance of agricultural enterprises under market and environmental uncertainty. By converting complex administrative, financial, geospatial, and survey data into decision-relevant evidence, this research informs policymakers, agricultural lenders, insurers, industry leaders, and farm business owners.

My scholarship also has substantial international reach. I have conducted research and collaborated with scholars and institutions across Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America. My international research examines food security, agricultural productivity, financial constraints, technology adoption, contract farming, value-chain participation, food prices, climate risk, rural entrepreneurship, labor allocation, and the welfare of households and small agricultural enterprises. The empirical reach of this work includes India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, China, Japan, the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Nigeria, and other developing and emerging economies.

These collaborations have included work with the Asian Development Bank, International Rice Research Institute, International Food Policy Research Institute, International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, European Commission, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and Institute of Economic Growth in New Delhi. I am a Research Fellow of the Institute of Labor Economics in Bonn, a Research Fellow of the International Rice Research Institute, and a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Economic Growth. I have also held visiting appointments at Nagoya University, Waseda University, and Hitotsubashi University in Japan. Through these appointments and partnerships, I have contributed to research on rice-sector innovation, returns to agricultural research, food-price shocks, fertilizer markets, agricultural mechanization, productivity, and labor allocation across developed and developing economies.

An important component of my international impact is evaluating agricultural innovations and their implications for food security and economic welfare. My work has assessed the adoption and socioeconomic returns of improved rice varieties, agricultural machinery, digital technologies, extension services, contract farming, and modern value chains. It has also examined the effects of export restrictions, public stockholding, input subsidies, market disruptions, conflict, and climate shocks on food availability, prices, nutrition, and enterprise performance. This research helps international development organizations and national governments identify interventions that generate measurable returns while improving the resilience of food systems.

The broader purpose of my research is to improve both business performance and human welfare. More productive and resilient agricultural enterprises contribute to stable food supplies, stronger rural economies, and more dependable employment and income. Better-designed credit, insurance, and risk-management institutions help viable businesses withstand economic, environmental, and market shocks. Effective technologies and evidence-based policies can increase productivity, reduce food loss, conserve natural resources, strengthen food security, and improve the well-being of business owners, employees, consumers, and rural communities.

My research therefore connects rigorous academic inquiry with the decisions faced by businesses, governments, and development organizations. Through externally funded research, policy engagement, international collaboration, editorial leadership, and mentorship of emerging scholars, I seek to advance knowledge in agribusiness and applied economics while delivering measurable value to agricultural enterprises, food-system participants, public institutions, and society.
