Luis Gutierrez is a PhD student within the Biology and Society program working with Beth Polidoro and Ann Kinzig. His research deals with using trait-based approaches to understand coral species vulnerability to threats such as climate change as well as to make predictions for how coral decline will impact the ecological functional resilience of coral reefs. His focus is primarily in the Caribbean where corals and reef systems have already seen widespread decline and are projected to be severely impacted by continued climate stress.
He graduated from Arizona State University with a BS in Biological Sciences (Conservation Biology & Ecology) with minors in Sustainability and Spanish. While in undergrad he completed an honors thesis that dealt with understanding barriers preventing minority students from entering into environmental fields of study.
