Hongwu Xu is Professor of School of Molecular Sciences and Center for Materials of the Universe and Affiliated Faculty Member of School of Earth and Space Exploration. His research interests include thermodynamics, crystallography, and minerals/materials science. His research has involved structural characterization and thermodynamic measurements of natural minerals and synthetic materials, enabling determination of their structure-stability relationships at relevant temperature, pressure and chemical conditions. The systems he has studied include oxides, hydroxides, silicates, titanates, niobates, sulfates, gas hydrates, metal-organic frameworks and actinide compounds etc., with a wide range of Earth, energy, and environmental applications. He has expertise in high-pressure high-/low-temperature neutron diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and various high-temperature calorimetric techniques. He has a Ph.D. and a M.A. in Geosciences from Princeton University, U.S.A., and a M.S. in Mineralogy and Crystallography and a B.S. in Mineralogy, Petrology, and Geochemistry from Nanjing University, China. He is a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America (MSA), Chief Editor of American Mineralogist: International Journal of Earth and Planetary Materials Research (MSA’s flagship journal), and has published >200 papers in peer-reviewed journals in mineralogy, chemistry, and materials science.
