Graphic Information Technology Program Chair
Laurie Ralston has taught in the Graphic Information Technology (GIT) program at the Polytechnic School, one of Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University since 2011. She is the chair of the GIT program, teaching video production and print/digital design. At the graduate level, she teaches research methods and academic writing. She serves as chair or committee member for dozens of master's students and honors students and advises seniors during their senior projects.
Dr. Ralston mentors student projects through her classes, providing her students with real-world client interaction opportunities. These projects include branding, web design, print design, project management, video production, and motion graphics for commercial purposes.
She is the creator and director of the Make Media Lab, a video and photography lab for the students, faculty, and staff of the Polytechnic campus. Dr. Ralston has been involved with several federal and state grant projects, including those for the U.S. Department of Education, Homeland Security/FEMA, and the State of Arizona Governor's Office of Energy. She was the Communication Team Faculty Advisor for the U.S. Department of Energy competitive ASU EcoCAR 3 Team and the faculty advisor for the GIT Club and EcoCAR Club.
Dr. Ralston is a member of the Educause Learning Initiative (ELI), the Online Learning Consortium, AIGA, and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. She has been a first-round judge in the Software & Information Industry Association CODiE Awards for several years, as well as a proposal reviewer for grant programs and conferences. She is a member of the ASU Instructional Designer's Group and was on the LMS evaluation team that led to the adoption of Canvas.
She serves on the Board of Directors for the Accrediting Council for Collegiate Graphic Communications (ACCGC), the accreditor of the Graphics Information Technology program.
Past Experience:
Dr. Ralston has spent over 20 years at ASU. She has served as the assistant project manager of the eLearning Network, a federally-funded grant project in ASU's College of Education; provided technology services to the students, faculty, and staff at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law for one year, then served as the director of information technology for five more years; and worked as the project coordinator of the Campus Public Emergency Communications Project, a Homeland Security/FEMA-funded grant project in the environmental technology management program.
She taught as a faculty associate in Spring 2010 at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. While at the college of law, she co-taught classes on courtroom technologies and creative writing for lawyers.
