Dr. Peter W. Jurutka is a tenured professor in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and in the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering at Arizona State University, as well as a professor of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Arizona College of Medicine–Phoenix, where he is a founding faculty member. Since joining ASU in 2004 after postdoctoral research and a teaching appointment at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, he has built an internationally recognized research program at the intersection of molecular endocrinology and human health, combined with training and nurturing future leaders in medicine and biomedical research, many of whom now serve as clinicians, scientists, and healthcare innovators.
Dr. Jurutka’s laboratory is a launchpad for students pursuing paths in biomedical research, clinical practice, and the health professions, offering hands-on research experiences that have produced more than 300 peer-reviewed abstracts and publications co-authored by his ASU students. His team investigates how nuclear hormone receptors—key regulators of genes controlling metabolism, immunity, and cell growth—can be leveraged to fight cancer and better understand diseases such as osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and depression.
A recipient of the Norwich-Eaton Young Investigator Research Award and the John Haddad Young Investigator Award, as well as ASU’s Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Student Mentoring, Dr. Jurutka is widely recognized for both his scientific contributions and his dedication to developing the next generation of biomedical researchers.
He serves as an independent reviewer for journals including PLOS One, Journal of Nutrition, Endocrinology, and Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, and his research has appeared in leading scientific publications such as Journal of Biological Chemistry, PNAS, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Cancer Research, Nutrition Reviews, and Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.

- B.S. Chemistry (Honors), University of Nevada
Professor Peter Jurutka is an award-winning molecular endocrinologist at ASU with a research focus on gene-environment interactions, anti-aging gene expression, chemoprevention, and steroid hormone/nuclear receptor biology. He directs a group of interdisciplinary researchers in his Molecular Endocrinology Laboratory at the ASU Health Futures Center where his team applies modern molecular medicine approaches to elucidate fundamental questions in human health and disease. Researchers in the Jurutka laboratory study the mechanism of action of steroid hormones, with particular emphasis on vitamin D and retinoids, and their role in the pathophysiology of diseases. Some of these specific projects include: 1) collaborating with research partners at the Mayo Clinic, the Biodesign Institute, and Phoenix Children's Hospital to elucidate genetic "fingerprints" for diagnosis/treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and the role of vitamin D and the gut microbiome in IBS and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) pathophysiology, 2) mechanistic effects of "nutraceuticals" such as vitamin D, resveratrol, urolithin, and curcumin on anti-aging gene expression and chemoprevention, especially in GI cancers, 3) rexinoid drug design/discovery to develop pharmaceuticals for treatment of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease in combination with vitamin D, and 4) neurobiology of vitamin D action in autism and depression. In 2015, his lab was the first to provide molecular evidence that vitamin D could enhance the production of serotonin in brain cells, a critical new insight with implications for disorders including autism and depression that are linked to a deficiency in brain serotonin levels. The work from the Jurutka research program has been published in high-impact peer-reviewed biomedical journals, and highlighted in the popular press including Phoenix Magazine and the Boston Globe.
