Lauren van Huisstede is an Assistant Research Professor in the Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation at Arizona State University. Her research integrates developmental cognitive science, education, and the arts to better understand how children learn through movement, imagination, and social interaction.
Her work explores how interactive, play-based instructional strategies—especially during shared reading and storytime—can enhance preschoolers’ narrative comprehension, emotion understanding, and engagement. She is especially interested in supporting diverse learners, including multilingual children and those with disabilities or high communication needs, through inclusive and innovative teaching practices.
Dr. Van Huisstede is part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team (https://www.literacyatplay.org) that has developed and evaluated drama-based professional development programs for preschool teachers—including a large-scale randomized control trial (RCT) of EYEPlay (Early Years Educators at Play)—and created inclusive programming for preschoolers with high communication needs—EYEPlay ADAPT (All Different Abilities Participate and Thrive).
Her work has been supported by major funding agencies, including the U.S. Department of Education and The Spencer Foundation, contributing to more than $5 million in funded research projects.
