George Edward (Edd) Gibson, Jr., PhD, PE, joined the Del E. Webb School of Construction within the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) in August 2009 as its Program Chairman and served in that capacity until 2011. From 2010 to 2018 he served first as Interim Director and then as Director of SSEBE from its infancy to the dynamic enterprise it is today. In the capacity of Director, he oversaw rapid growth to several educational programs encompassing over 60 faculty and 75 staff members, over 1700 students, research expenditures of over $18.2 million per annum, $19 million in endowments, and a yearly operational budget of over $10 million. He led development and significant fundraising for a new 130k gsf building, College Avenue Commons, that houses SSEBE, raising over $23 million in donations to the School during his tenure.
Dr. Gibson currently serves as Professor Emeritus in the School and is the President and CEO of the National Academy of Construction.
Prior to joining ASU, Gibson started the accredited construction engineering program at the University of Alabama, and before that was a faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin for 15 years. At UT, he headed the architectural engineering undergraduate program and the graduate construction engineering and project management program. He began his academic career as a Visiting Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University. Dr. Gibson has several years of industry experience prior to academia, served as a U.S. Army officer, and is a licensed professional engineer in Texas.
Originally from Alabama, Gibson’s educational background includes a bachelor's degree and doctorate in civil engineering from Auburn University and an MBA in Engineering Management from the University of Dallas. He has taught on the university level for over 30 years and has delivered more than 220 short courses to industry practitioners during that time, receiving awards for university and continuing education instruction. Most recently, he was the recipient of the 2022 Top 5% Teaching Award by the ASU Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.
During his career, Gibson has served as PI or co-PI on almost $11.5 million worth of funded research from sponsors such as NSF, Construction Industry Institute, National Research Council, NIOSH, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Texas Department of Transportation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, Department of Energy, Design-Build Institute of America, New Horizons Foundation, and others. His research and teaching interests include front end planning, organizational change, asset management, earned value management systems, alternative dispute resolution, safety and prevention through design, and risk management among others.
Gibson was instrumental in developing a number of Construction Industry Institute (CII) tools: the suite of five Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI) tools, the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) Maturity and Accuracy Total Rating System (MATRS) tool, the Integrated Project Risk Assessment (IPRA) tool and the Integrated Project/Program Management (IP2M) Maturity and Environment Total Risk Rating (METRR) tool; in addition, he has consulted with over 75 organizations. He is an expert in educational leadership, having held a variety of successful academic management positions over the past 19 years.
Dr Gibson is an elected member of the National Academy of Construction and a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He was awarded the 2016 ASCE R. L. Peurifoy Award for outstanding research. He served as a Visiting Academic Fellow in the Laing O’Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology at the University of Cambridge in spring 2019. He received the Richard L. Tucker Service Award from the National Academy of Construction in 2020 (1st recipient). He recently was awarded the Richard L. Tucker Leadership and Service Award from CII (2022).
The faculty profile of Edd Gibson written in conjunction with the grand opening of the College Avenue Commons in 2014 gives some of his background. The Auburn announcement and ASU announcement concerning his election as Distinguished Member of ASCE in 2020 provide additional details.
