K. Hazel Kwon (PhD in Communication, SUNY-Buffalo) is a Professor of Digital Audiences and Founder / Lead Researcher at the MIDaS Lab at Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She also serves as Research Director for the School.
Her research interests focus on social/digital media and society, with a particular emphasis on the ways in which networked publics make sense of news events and how the problem of information disorder redefines the process of informing the public. Some of her research has been supported by Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Social Science Research Council, International Center for Journalists, and Gates Foundation.
Dr. Kwon was selected as one of the U.S.-Korea NextGen scholars by CSIS and has received multiple awards including: Herbert S. Dordick Dissertation Award from the International Communication Association (ICA); Emerging Scholars Award and Jung-Sook Lee Award from the Association for Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC); Kappa Tao Alpha Research Award from National Honor Society in Journalism and Mass Communication; Top Faculty Award from Chinese Communication Association; Top Debut Faculty Award from Broadcasting Education Association; and Top Four Paper Award from National Communication Association (NCA). Her publications have appeared in multiple high impact journals. Currently, she serves as a co-editor of the Journal of Communication Technology (https://www.joctec.net).
