Long Bio
I taught secondary science and math (7th-12th) grades for 15 years in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, and community college Geology and Algebra for 5 years in Washington and Arizona. I was a staff member at both Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and the Southern Ute Indian Tribe Education Department in Ignacio, Colorado. I also worked as a professional geologist in both the environmental consulting and mining industries across the western US.
I am in the last year of my PhD in Learning, Literacies and Techologies in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. My research focus on teachers' pedagogical content knowledge for teaching natural hazards using a place-based approach and a framework grounded in the spatial and temporal ways of thinking of a geologist. I also am currently working as a research assistant for the Arizona Community Educator Initiative, a statewide effort funded using Covid relief funds, which aims to increase connections between communities and classrooms. In the past I worked as a research assistant on several other large projects, including an NSF-funded math education study through the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport & Energy at ASU and two Institute of Education Sciences studies, one on cognitive engagement and one on concept change.
