Monica McDermott's research focuses on race, class and identity in the United States. Her latest book is Whiteness in America, an assessment of what it means to be white in the US. She is also the author of Working-Class White: The Making and Unmaking of Race Relations, an ethnographic study of interracial interactions and white identity in Atlanta and Boston. Her current research includes studies of class identity and racial attitudes among the white working class. She has authored articles on race and neighborhood contexts, white racial identity and attitudes, and immigrant incorporation.
