Toby Yatso - Clinical Assistant Professor of Music Theatre. Yatso is an actor, musician, and music theatre specialist in performance, direction, and instruction for the Music Theatre and Opera department in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre. Yatso is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, and he was artist-in-residence for The Phoenix Theatre Company for fifteen years. Having performed in dozens of productions for TPTC, Yatso has also performed for The Phoenix Symphony, Arizona Theatre Company, Stray Cat Theatre, Actors Theatre, Childsplay, and he has directed several musicals for ASU, a Legoland-NY show, and various theatrical projects for surrounding AZ companies. Before joining the ASU faculty in 2011, he served on the faculty of Arizona School for the Arts.

Yatso teaches courses in acting and music theatre performance, including foundational and advanced acting skills, song and scene study and interpretation, script and score analysis, movement, style, and auditioning.
Twice-hosted the ariZoni Theatre Awards Ceremony, having won six ariZoni Awards for acting in major roles in both plays and musicals and received sixteen nominations throughout his years of participation (2008-2015).

Favorite roles with The Phoenix Theatre Company include Shakespeare in Something Rotten, Alex in the one-man play Buyer and Cellar, Arthur in Camelot, Bert in Mary Poppins, Buddy in Elf, Orin et al. in Little Shop of Horrors, Frank in It's Only a Play, David in Bullets Over Broadway, Actor 2 in Baskerville, Baritone in The All Night Strut, Clown 2 in The 39 Steps, Lancelot (et al.) in Spamalot, Malcolm in The Full Monty, Leo in The Producers, Harold in ‘S Wonderful, Male in Forbidden Broadway, Cosme in Glorious, Corny Collins in Hairspray, Joe in The Spitfire Grill, Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, and Princeton/Rod in four productions of Avenue Q.
Yatso has also played Patrick Bateman in American Psycho at Stray Cat Theatre, Tom in Hunter Gatherers at Actors Theatre, Ash in Evil Dead: The Musical at Nearly Naked Theatre Company, Mr. Mayor/Wickersham Brother in Seussical at Childsplay, and Orin (et al.) in Little Shop of Horrors at Arizona Broadway Theatre.
With The Phoenix Symphony, Yatso has performed concert roles as Riff in West Side Story (conducted by Tito Muñoz, starring Matt Doyle), Ewart in The Music Man, featured soloist in An Evening with Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Mr. Sowerberry in Oliver! Narrated concerts include Lemony Snicket’s The Composer is Dead, Gerald McBoing Boing, Tubby The Tuba, The Pirate King, A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Romeo and Juliet, The Remarkable Farkle McBride, Uzu and Muzu from Kakaruzu, Peter and the Wolf.
With Arizona Theatre Company, Yatso covered the title role in a workshop of My Man Godfrey, and for the Festival of New American Theatre at TPTC, Yatso has performed in staged readings of Onward & Upward, Tropical Heat, Nureyev’s Eyes, Mozart: The Rock Opera, Cookin's a Drag, Lunch at Audrey's, and music directed Second To Nun and several composer/lyricist cabarets.
ASU directing projects include Pippin, Head Over Heels, Runaways, Triassic Parq, The Valley, Guys and Dolls, Company, Smile, Bat Boy: The Musical, A Supreme Evening of Statehood for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and past ASU Music Theatre Showcases. Other favorite shows directed: The Santaland Diaries, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Oedipus for Kids!, Devil Boys from Beyond, Forbidden Broadway, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Lucky Stiff, Totally RED!, Romeo & Juliet and Harry Potter concerts with The Phoenix Symphony.
For Legoland NY, Yatso directed the Dreamscape show. He has collaborated with many AZ companies including Davisson Entertainment, BrockPro Entertainment, Theater Works, Mesa Encore Theatre, Greasepaint YouTheatre, and he has twice hosted the ariZoni Theatre Awards Ceremony, having won six ariZoni Awards for acting in major roles in both plays and musicals and received sixteen nominations throughout his years of participation.
Yatso has been an educator and coach for musical theatre training programs at Childsplay, Bay View Music Festival (MI), and was a founding director of the TPTC Musical Theatre Intensive. Before joining the ASU faculty in 2011, he was on the faculty of Arizona School for the Arts.
