Dr. Day Brown is an environmental chemist with expertise in artificial photosynthesis for mitigating climate change through the production of alternative fuels. With a passion for understanding the interconnectedness between STEM and real-world issues, Day set out to be her family’s first generation Afro-Hispana in science.
Starting at small community colleges, she quickly developed an interest in making chemistry accessible. In 2017, Day obtained her BS in Chemistry from Purdue University Northwest and looked towards conducting research with a focus in green chemistry. Her graduate work surrounds the formation of alternative fuels using Ni-containing compounds in hopes of furthering the field of renewable energy. In July 2023, she earned her PhD in Chemistry from Portland State University and joined ASU West Valley to teach environmental chemistry.
When people hear that I’m a chemist, I always get the same response… ‘I hated chemistry’ OR 'Chemistry was so hard!" … and honestly, I can’t help but want to show them a more accessible world of chemistry.
Day is passionate about helping students find their way through their undergraduate career and beyond. She hopes to impact her students by challenging them to become formidable scientists that want to make a difference in the world.
