Gathering Ourselves is an interdisciplinary research initiative dedicated to advancing holistic, culturally grounded healthcare for Indigenous people incarcerated in tribal jails. Guided by the teachings of the medicine wheel, this initiative recognizes that wellbeing is inherently interconnected, encompassing the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of health.
As the first research effort of its kind, Gathering Ourselves seeks to build an integrated system of care specifically designed for Indigenous individuals experiencing incarceration in tribal jurisdictions. This population is one of the most underserved and least understood populations in the United States. This population often faces significant barriers to care, limited health resources, and longstanding structural inequities.
Gathering Ourselves aims to generate knowledge, elevate Indigenous voices, and support the development of sustainable, tribally led approaches to wellness within correctional settings. Ultimately, this initiative strives to strengthen pathways to healing for Native people both during incarceration and as they return to their families and communities.
