Edmonds earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Communication at Arizona State University, where he was named a Dessie E. Larsen Fellow. He subsequently earned his post-graduate certificate in Gerontology from ASU at the West campus. He also earned his doctorate of education in leadership and innovation at ASU. Edmonds was a Spring 2022 Barrett Emeritus Fellow, is an Honors faculty member at ASU, and has been awarded two Outstanding Faculty Teaching Awards. He began teaching at ASU in the year 2000 and is an accomplished keynote speaker, appearing at a number national and regional conferences.
He is a professional speaker and is listed with various speakers bureaus. He also was awarded the Robert B. Rutherford, Jr. Memorial Fellowship while earning his doctorate and the Dessie E. Larsen Fellowship (Communication/Performance Studies) during his M.A. studies. From the community, Larry was awarded a OneAZ Credit Union Community Leadership scholarship, as well. Edmonds is a current member of the advisory board for Diversity in Organizations, Communities, and Nations.
He previously served as chair of the Contract Faculty Personnel Committee in the College of Letters and Sciences (now the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at ASU, and is a former President of the ASU Retirees Association.
As an addition to his teaching duties over the years, Edmonds has authored and revised a variety of full-length ancillary materials to accompany dozens of popular textbooks published by five of the most respected textbook companies in the world. His new book, "Intersectionality: An Arts-based Approach to Student Awareness" is a treatment more on intersectionality than on the area of arts-based research methodologies. He also has traveled the state of Arizona, in a Chautauquan role, presenting the lives of the late Senator Carl. T Hayden (D-AZ), George W.P Hunt, Barry Goldwater.

Current research is in the area of the intersectionality of gender and cultural identities.
Other research includes parental involvement of bilingual/bicultural parents in k-12 settings.
