Levin Welch is an assistant professor of sociology at the School of Social and Family Dynamics. Welch specializes in qualitative and comparative historical methodology, political economy, global social change, social theory, Indigenous studies, world-systems analysis, rural sociology, class inequality, racism, culture, and time.
Welch is currently working on several projects that analyze an original archive of publications and other records from the Nimiipuu/Nez Perce and their neighbors about Nimiipuu/Nez Perce social worlds before and since Western imperialism to investigate how the persistence of Indigenous peoplehood affects world history and social change. Welch is also serving as a special co-guest editor for a Special Issue on “Indigeneity, History, and Historical Analysis” with Critical Sociology. Some of Welch’s earlier work analyzed the relationships between neoliberalism and financial collapse; social movements; coping with economic loss in a rural community; long-historical patterns of warfare.
